We've waited a long time to get something on you. You honest men are such a problem and such a headache. But we knew you'd slip sooner or later - and this is just what we wanted."

"You seem to be pleased about it."

"Don't I have good reason to be?"

"But, after all, I did break one of your laws."

"Well, what do you think they're for?"

Dr. Ferris did not notice the sudden look on Rearden's face, the look of a man hit by the first vision of that which he had sought to see. Dr. Ferris was past the stage of seeing; he was intent upon delivering the last blows to an animal caught in a trap.

"Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against - then you'll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We're after power and we mean it. You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you'd better get wise to it. There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers - and then you cash in on guilt. Now, that's the system, Mr. Rearden, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with." Pot Bust Worth $30-million, Police Say By Oliver Moore
Source: Globe and Mail January 12, 2004
The mammoth scale of two Toronto-area marijuana grow-operations busted on the weekend shows that “commercial marijuana factories have reached epidemic proportions in Ontario,” police said Monday. A joint operation by officers of the Ontario Provincial Police and the Barrie Police Service at a former Molson brewery, a stone's-throw from a busy highway, turned up thousands of plants. A raid on another building nearby netted thousands more plants. The total street value of the drugs is estimated at $30-million.

All according to script, so far

"Script?", I hear someone say. "What do you mean, 'script'?".
The following is a link to an in-depth local broadcast stream:
http://makeashorterlink.com/?H2B552C07

Take special note of the newsreader interviewing a local police chief.

The newsreader asks the chief directly, "Wouldn't decriminalization solve the problem?" and the chief does not answer directly, but instead goes off on a wild tangent about how they have to end organized crime operations.

Of course, it's no answer...because they don't have any. The same old song and dance... and practically scripted from the DEA's playbook. No deviation. Never answer directly. Steer the conversation away from legalization back to the influences of organized crime... which, of course, wouldn't receive their funds if the weed were legal.

But then again, neither would the police. Continued...

The Hayden man, who has a state Medical Marijuana Registry card allowing him to use the drug for pain caused by his cancer and phlebitis, just wants to recover the marijuana confiscated from him by a federal agent.

Hemp and Marijuana: Myths & Realities by David P. West, Ph.D. for the North American Industrial Hemp Council (Excerpted)
http://naihc.org/hemp_information/content/hemp.mj.html

Hemp and Marijuana Myths & Realities

A Botanical and Biochemical Introduction

Hemp. Has there ever been a plant so fraught with confusion and controversy? The word itself carries a confusing history. "Hemp" was for medieval Europeans a generic term used to describe any fiber. With European expansion, fiber plants encountered during exploration were commonly called "hemp." Thus we have a bewildering variety of plants that carry the name hemp: Manila hemp (abacá, Musa textilis), sisal hemp (Agave sisalana), Mauritius hemp (Furcraea gigantea), New Zealand hemp (Phormium tenax), Sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea), Indian hemp (jute, Corchorus capsularis or C. clitorus), Indian hemp (Apocynum cannabinum), bow-string hemp (Sansevieria cylindrica).

This botanical confusion was compounded by the introduction of a new word to describe hemp-marihuana (now commonly written "marijuana"). The word was first coined in the 1890s, but was adopted by the Bureau of Narcotics in the 1930s to describe all forms of Cannabis and to this day U.S. drug enforcement agencies continue to call the plant marijuana without regard to botanical distinctions. Indeed, a recent conference held in Jefferson City, Missouri and sponsored by Drug Watch International and the Drug Enforcement Administration was entitled, "Marijuana: Myths, Concerns, Facts"-yet much of the discussion concerned industrial hemp and the legal products made from it.

The conflation of the word "marijuana" and the word "hemp" has placed a heavy burden on public policymakers. Many believe that by legalizing hemp they are legalizing marijuana. Yet in more than two dozen other countries, governments have accepted the distinction between the two types of Cannabis and, while continuing to penalize the growing of marijuana, have legalized the growing of industrial hemp. The U.S. government remains unconvinced.

To understand the difference between hemp and marijuana, let's begin with two botanical analogies: field corn and sweet corn; breadseed poppies and opium poppies.

Reality: Feral hemp, or ditchweed, is a remnant of the hemp once grown by U.S. farmers. A study of feral hemp in Kansas showed that it contains extremely low levels of THC, from 0.5 percent to as low as 0.05 percent and less [41]. It has no drug value, but it does offer an important environmental benefit as a desirable nesting habitat for birds. Yet 99 percent of the "marijuana" being eradicated by the federal government-at great public expense-consists of this harmless ditchweed.

Blatent Bigotry (Excerpted from The Emperor Wears NO Clothes)
http://www.electricemperor.com/eecdrom/HTML/EMP/04/ECH04_08.HTM#bigotry
Starting with the 1898 Spanish American War, the Hearst newspaper had denounced Spaniards, Mexican-Americans, and Latinos.

After the seizure of 800,000 acres of Hearst’s prime Mexican timberland by the “marihuana” smoking army of Pancho Villa,* these slurs intensified.

* The song “La Cucaracha” tells the story of one of Villa’s men looking for his stash of “marijuana por fumar!” (to smoke!)

Non-stop for the next for three decades, Hearst painted the picture of the lazy, pot-smoking Mexican—still one of our most insidious prejudices. Simultaneously, he waged a similar racist smear campaign against the Chinese, referring to them as the “Yellow Peril”.

Hearst, through pervasive and repetitive use, brought the word ‘marijuana’ into English.

From 1910 to 1920, Hearst’s newspapers would claim that the majority of incidents in which blacks were said to have raped white women could be traced directly to cocaine. This continued for 10 years until Hearst decided it was not “cocaine-crazed Negroes” raping white women—it was now “marijuana-crazed Negroes” raping white women.

Hearst’s and other sensationalistic tabloids ran hysterical headlines atop stories portraying “Negroes” and Mexicans as frenzied beasts who, under the influence of marijuana, would play anti-white “voodoo-satanic” music (jazz) and heap disrespect and “viciousness” onto the predominantly white readership. Other such Jim Crow (apartheid) offenses resulting from this drug-induced “crime wave” included: stepping on white men’s shadows, looking white people directly in the eye for three seconds or more, looking at a white woman twice, laughing at a white person, etc.

For such “crimes,” hundreds of thousands of Mexicans and blacks spent, in aggregate, millions of years in jails, in prisons, and on chain gangs, under brutal segregation laws that remained in effect throughout the U.S. until the 1950s and ’60s. Hearst, through pervasive and repetitive use, pounded the obscure Mexican slang word “marijuana” into the English-speaking American consciousness. Meanwhile, the word “hemp” was discarded and “cannabis,” the scientific term, was ignored or buried.

The actual Spanish word for hemp is “cáñamo.” But using a Mexican “Sonoran” colloquialism — marijuana, often Americanized as “marihuana” — guaranteed that no one would realize that the proper terms for one of the world’s chief natural medicine, “cannabis,” and for the premier industrial resource, “hemp,” had been outflanked, outlawed, and pushed out of the language.

CHANNELGATE!
From: Basil Venitis
Date: Mon, 12 Jan 2004
TV Channel 10 of Greece accused the Greek Government of jamming its broadcast during the speech of the opposition leader Costas Karamanlis! State employees were caught redhanded with jamming equipment near the antenna of channel 10 at the exact time of the blackout of its signal! The employees refused to stop the jamming until they get orders from their higher ups in ERT, the state organization that supervises the brodcasting media! This is the Watergate of Greece that might ruin the reputation of George Papandreou, the new leader of the governing socialist party PASOK. Messages of sympathy are pouring in to channel 10 from all over the world. People see how power corrupts officials and statists. Today members of the opposition party have promised to bring the issue for discussion at the Greek Parliament.

So far, I've seen nothing to eliminate the possibility that Bush is on the same course as Hitler. And I've seen far too many analogies to dismiss the possibility. The propaganda. The lies. The rhetoric. The nationalism. The flag waving. The pretext of 'preventive war'.

There isn't much doubt in my mind - anyone who compares the history of Hitler's rise to power and the progression of recent events in the US cannot avoid the parallels. It's incontrovertible. Is Bush another Hitler? I'm afraid now, that what may still come to pass is a reign far more savage and barbaric than that of the Nazis.

Open Door Policy By Karen Kwiatkowski
The American Conservative January 19, 2004 issue
A strange thing happened on the way to the war.
Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, a former Pentagon insider, concludes her observations on the run-up to the Iraq war in this last of a three-part series.
As the winter of 2002 approached, I was increasingly amazed at the success of the propaganda campaign being waged by President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and neoconservative mouthpieces at the Washington Times and Wall Street Journal. I speculated about the necessity but unlikelihood of a Phil-Dick-style minority report on the grandiose Feith-Wolfowitz-Rumsfeld-Cheney vision of some future Middle East where peace, love, and democracy are brought about by pre-emptive war and military occupation.
